Reviews

Disappointed
(6/18/2008 9:30:23 PM)
Based on a really good experience I had from this restaurant a couple years ago, I visited this restaurant recently and was disappointed.

The atmosphere and service are still nice, but the food was not prepared very well.  The dishes were either tasteless or too salty.  I hope that was just because I went there on the wrong day.

Nice addition to Yaletown
(2/11/2008 11:33:09 AM)
I finally gave this place a try a couple weeks ago.  It was surprisingly busy that night, but the food and service were pretty good.  I don't exactly remember the dishes I ordered but they were all pretty good.  I'll go back for tapas and drinks for sure.

Great Meal (again)
(2/11/2008 11:30:10 AM)
Just like the one on Denman, the food was great! Needless to mention their skewers are as good as usual, I tried their desserts and they were surprisingly good as well.  I will definitely go more often.

Excellent food & wine in Burnaby
(1/7/2008 11:41:54 AM)
I went there with my gf recently.  Really nice decor & food, especially it is in Burnaby.  The lobster cappuccino, scallops, duck breasts, and lamb shank were all really good! A bottle of Portuguese wine blended in really well with the food as well.

The only reason that I didn't give it a 5 star is because the smile of our server were really really professional, quite condescending in some ways (if you know what I mean).  It could be just me.  Sorry if I perceived the wrong way because I was drunk by the end of the night.

Nuevo Latino Cuisine

Nice new Latino restaurant in Gastown. Nice decors, drinks and food.  The fresh scallop and duck confit pupusa are my favorites.  I will definitely come back again.

Little & Cozy restaurant

My gf and I went to this restaurant on a special occasion.  We had a great time and really enjoy their food and atmosphere.  I will definitely go back again.

Decent food but too busy
(11/2/2007 12:28:35 PM)
I have just recently visited Italian Kitchen.  Their food is pretty nice, especially the Antipasto Platter.  It was presented very nicely and full of variety.  I didn't like the Sicilian Clams pizza though because the spinach tasted kind of bitter.  Anyways, it's a great spot for meals or drinks.  Last note, this place has pretty waitresses with uniforms that fit, too.

Good Valued Entrees, Expensive Drinks
(8/20/2007 11:03:59 AM)
My friends and I just tried out this restaurant recently.  We were all pretty satisfied by the food and service.  I was especially satisfied by their Veal entree. The only thing I have to complain a bit is their drinks menu.  They all seem to be a bit overpriced, especially the wine list.

A good place for large groups
(8/20/2007 10:56:16 AM)
My coworkers and I went to Al Porto for a team dinner.  The servers were attentive and the food came at a good pace as well.  The only part that was not perfect was my rack of lamb.  It was a little bit overcooked than what I asked for (rare).  Don't get me wrong, it was not bad at all.  I understand that it's not easy to accommodate a party of 17 and be perfect on every dish.  I will still go back in the future.

My Favorite Place for Crepes
(8/2/2007 1:14:42 PM)
I was introduced to this place by my coworkers recently.  I had the crepes with seafood, mushroom, and white wine sauce.  It was excellent.

I decided to go back again with my gf last week.  I tried something else with chicken instead of seafood.  It was again very delicious.  I will definitely go back often.

Note: This place does get very busy.  Prepare to wait in line for a bit.

One of the best Japanese restaurants in town
(7/10/2007 6:39:51 AM)
After hearing about this restaurant a lot recently, I have finally given this restaurant a try last week.  Both my gf and I are very impressed with their decors, service, and food.  Their menu is not very long but it contains both traditional and izakaya dishes.  That's also something I like about this restaurant.

Anyways, I will definitely go back again.

Still one of my favorites
(4/23/2007 6:58:03 PM)

I just went to this restaurant over the weekend.  It was great as the previous reviewer said.  We had the lobster bisque and duck pate as appetizers, and duck breast and lobster with asparagess sauce.  They were excellent!  The atmosphere and the service were really good as well.  It's one of the best meals I have had in 2007 so far.

Nothing really spectacular
(3/29/2007 10:48:50 PM)
I just tried this place last week.  The decors & ambiance are pretty nice & cozy.  I tried their crab cake (the dish that I always order when I am trying out a restaurant), ahi tuna roll, margarita prawns, some of the grilled skewers, linguini.  The food was alright but nothing really surprised me and my gf, except for their Baily Creme Brule.  It was a pretty nice creme brule!  I will go back for drinks and desserts for sure!

Hidden Gem in South Granville
(3/17/2007 12:19:23 PM)
One day, My gf and I were looking for a place for brunch and discovered this place at the French Cultural Center.  It's a little French bistro that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner at a reasonable price.  At first we were a bit confused after we saw the menu because it was completely in French, but the server was very experienced and explained every item to us.  We tried the benedict and omelette.  They were really good.  I will definitely go back for dinner next time.

The only negative point is that they only accept cash! :-(

Trendy Izakaya on Denman Street
(2/9/2007 3:13:05 PM)
I have recently visited this new Izakaya.  The decors is similar to Happa Izakaya, which is a little dark and trendy.  Their selling point is more on their innovating presentation of food instead of the food itself.  After all the quality of the food is still pretty good but the portion is way too small.  I still think Shiru-bay is my favorite izakaya.

Nice Restaurant in Surrey
(1/8/2007 10:08:50 PM)
After hearing about this restaurant many times, I have finally tried it with my gf last week.  It's a heritage house and it has a very warm and cozy decors.   We tried the followings from their 4-courses set menu: Prawns Provencale, Duck Liver, Cream of Asparagus, Vension,  Roasted leg of Lamb, and, sorry ladies, I forgot what I had for the desserts.

The food and the service were all very good.  Our server also recommended us a pretty nice bottle of wine as well.  The nice thing about this restaurant is that it's on the Entertainment Book.  We got a $21 off on our bill.  This is quite a good deal because it only cost us $110 + tips in total.  I will definitely go back again!

Hidden Izakaya in Burnaby
(12/7/2006 11:17:53 AM)
My gf and I just tried this restaurant recently.  We had a pretty good meal there.  We tried their fresh Uni Sashimi (Sea Urchin), Ebi Mayo, Baked Misugai with Garlic Butter (Geoduck), and Kura Dinner.  They were all pretty good.  The Uni Sashimi was very fresh!

They have a lot of different kind of fish on their menu as well.  Unfortunately, we didn't have the stomach space to store them all.  We will definitely try them one by one next time.

Casual Greek Restaurant on Hazelbridge Way
(11/20/2006 2:09:31 PM)
I just checked this place out over the weekend.  It was rather quiet because it was a Sunday night, but the atmosphere was still pretty nice & casual.  We tried some of their appys and the food came really surprisingly fast.  Their Stuffed Prawns with crab meat & cream and Homus Dip were pretty good.  Give it a shot if you are looking for some casual dining in Richmond.

Best place to spend the day there with my laptop

This Bread Garden has been my favorite place to spend a quiet day there with my laptop because they provide free wireless Internet.  Also, I like their sandwiches.

Disappointed DineOut Experience
(10/25/2006 4:26:04 PM)
I went there during the dineout event two years ago.  The service was rather arrogant and the food on the dineout menu wasn't really spectacular.  I guess I shouldn't go back again until I can afford their regular menus (at least $125 per person).

Good Deal Korean BBQ House
(10/9/2006 5:32:42 PM)

My gf and I just checked this place out during the weekend.  We both find they have pretty good deals on their dinner sets for two.

We tried their Meat Combo, which has beef, pork, chicken, the usual Korean side dishes, and miso soup.  The meats were pretty well marinated and in pretty good quality.  The side dishes are competitve comparing to other Korean restaurants I have tired before.  It only costs around $25 or something (plus tax, of course) for both of us.  Combining with a bottle of Soju, it was one of the best and inexpensive combination for dinner.

The only negative side of the experience was the service was a bit slow.  May be that was a very busy night.

Anyways, I will definitely go back for Korean BBQ next time.

Small portion but really tasty
(10/1/2006 7:56:44 PM)
I just went to this place during the weekend.  It was one of the best Japanese restaurants I have ever been.  I tried their Beef Tataki, Sweet Potato Stick, Crusted Tuna with Sesame, and Taka-san roll (daily speical).  They were all really good, especially the taka-san roll (tempera on the top with scallop & salmon in the roll) & beef tataki.

This place get pretty busy during dinner time.  Reservation is recommended.

Yummy Parfait
(10/1/2006 5:55:08 PM)
I have checked out this place for years!  It's still as good as the first I visted.  I tried their Green Tea Parfait.  The japanese sticky rice ball, red bean, green tea ice cream, and green tea cake in that glass of parfait have melted my tongue.  If I wasn't that full after I finished it, I would have ordered another one.

City Dine - Nice atmosphere with nice food
(9/23/2006 2:03:10 PM)
My gf and I just tried this place this week during teh City Dine event.  It was really good and we had a good time.

We tried the Sweet Chilliwack Corn Soup, Seared Wild Salmon, Queen Charlotte Sablefish, Apple Raisin Strudel, and White Chocolate Cluizel Crème Brûlée.

I have to say the corn soup was really good.  It was not too rich but contained slices of dungeness crab.  I like it, but it would be even better if it was thicker.

The Salmon & Sablefish were both pretty good.  None of them were too dry or overcooked.  I personally like the Sablefish better because it was mixed well with the miso-maple broth.  Also the pulled pork risotto on the side was amazing!

The desserts were good but nothing really spectacular.

Anyways, we had a good time and our server was really professional and friendly.  I will definitely go back to this restaurant.

Alternative choice when everywhere else is packed
(9/18/2006 2:31:51 PM)
Have you ever had trouble finding a parking spot and a lounge that you can find a table in Yaletown on the weekend?  I think it wasn't easy for most of us.

Recently, my friends and I decided to go out for drinks in Yaletown.  We got there a bit late.  As expected, every lounge was completedly packed.  Since it took us almost 30 mins to find a parking already, we didn't want to go somewhere else.  We finally thought of this place after checking out every single lounge in Yaletown.

We got a table almost right away.  We tried their Chocolate Fondue and Cheese cake.  They were both pretty good.  I guess their fondue is one of the best I have had in Vancouver.   The service was just okay.  Nothing really spectacular.  It's a nice place for drinks if everywhere else is packed.

Didn't realize that I was in Richmond
(9/4/2006 2:02:28 PM)
This is definitely an alternative choice if you are craving for the kind of nice food & environment that are usually located in the downtown area and don't want to go all the way to downtown.  I went there with my gf and tried their Steamed Mussels, Garlic Mushrooms, Duck Breast, and Braised Lamb Shank.  The strong taste of white wine mussels, tender duck breast, and soft lamb shank were all really nice.  The combination of the sunset, the dishes we ordered, and the glasses of Ruffino Chianti in our hands have given me one of the best dining experience in Richmond.

I guess the ONLY complaint I have is bugs trying to get their last meal of the day after the sun is set.  Don't worry! You will get this if you sit closes to the short trees in the patio.  Sorry, I HATE bugs!   Nonetheless, I still had a great time!

Nice & Simple Meal in Burnaby
(8/21/2006 3:14:00 PM)
My gf and I went to this place during the weekend since I have heard quite a lot of buzz about this restaurant in Burnaby.  Thank God I got there early (6-ish).  It started to get packed 15 mins after we sat down.  We ordered their Beef Noodle, Deep Fried Pork Rib noodles, and Spicy Wonton.  They tasted quite good, but the beef noodle soup was a little bit bland.

In general, it's not a bad place for a quick bite since there wasn't anything really extraordinary.  Also it was quite tough to look for parking because the plaza that it's in is pretty small.  Some people were already doing double parking.

Ok food but SNOBBY attitude
(8/14/2006 9:02:15 AM)
I went there with my gf during the weekend and was quite disappointed.  The food is fresh in general except for the vegetables.  That's not a big deal for me because I am not a big fan of veggies anyways!

I am okay with the quality of food they serve for All-you-can-eat, but they were very snobby!!  We made a reservation in advance, but they placed us in a corner that is facing the back hall way and washroom.  I asked them if there was other options like moving our chairs to the other side of the table and let us sit facing the front door and our backs to the back hall way (washroom), but they said "No, it's the only way we can fit two people.  We are fully booked.  If you don't like it, we can't do anything about it."  I was like... WTF!? I know that you are fully booked everyday, but the Take-it-or-leave-it type of attitude won't get you very far!  I will never go back again!

Nothing Really Extraordinary
(8/7/2006 12:25:55 AM)
I found out about this place on the way of walking to see watch fireworks.  I finally tried it out during the weekend.  I guess it was a busy day, most of the stuff we wanted to try were sold-out.  We tried Kobe Beef Capriccio, Bin Taro Tataki, California Tofu, Torilika, and Takoyaki.  The beef capriccio and california tofu were pretty good and quite inovative, but the other 3 dishes are somewhat just normal and not very special.  Also, the decors were not very trendy as Hapa or Shiru-bay.  I am not sure if I will go back again.

Oyster Nite Only
(7/26/2006 4:23:49 PM)
I have been to this place when it was first opened.  It was the oyster night of the week (every Monday).  Nothing special about this place.   I agree with the previous reviewers that it's a bit too expensive for the quality of food and service they serve.  Nonetheless, the Monday Oyster deal is still a good deal and a good day to use your Entertainment book if you don't forget to present it to them BEFORE you order.

Exotic Experience
(7/16/2006 7:12:30 PM)
I finally tried this restaurant over the weekend.  I have always wanted to try East is East/Chai since I found out this place last year.

I wasn't sure rather I wanted to try Chai or East is East at first because I heard that Chai serves Vegetarian food only and I wasn't in the mood of just veggies.  I wanted meat!

I found out that Chai also serves meat dishes from the hostess and she offered to give us a tour of Chai.  After a short walk upstairs, I felt like I have entered a very different world.  The wall decorations, the tables and chairs, the carpets/rugs, and candals gave me a very strong feeling of being in a tent on a desert in middle east.

As for food, we chose to try their buffet because we wanted to try a bit of every dish.  The buffet has a salad bar, 10 different selections of hot food, and 4 ~ 5 selections of desserts/fruits.  My favorite hot dishes were Portebello Mushroom in South Indian Currey, Beef Kabob, Veggie Mantu, Tiger Prawn in Mango Currey, and Green Bean & Tofu in Coconut Currey.   I am not a super big fan of desserts, but their Rice Pudding was pretty good and the watermelon was pretty sweet & fresh as well.

There was also live performance as well.  The show was Tap Dancing.  It was pretty good as well.

It's not easy to pick on something negative about this restaurant.  The only thing I think they may want to improve on is their way of serving wine.  I ordered a bottle of wine, but I actually haven't seen the bottle or the cloak of the wine.  The wine was opened when I ordered, I assume, poured in a nicely looking bottle, and brought to my table while I was getting food from the food section.  It would be nice if they could at least open the wine in front of me and poured that into the beautiful bottle.  Don't get me wrong, the wine was not bad.  I am just being picky!

Drinks tasted weird
(7/13/2006 10:12:57 AM)
I went there for drinks with my friends one day.  We had a few shooters and highballs.  The highballs were not bad but the shooters tasted a bit... .   It could be because it was a super busy night and there was only one waitress/bartender.

Although the drinks were not very impressive, I will still give it a second chance because drinks are not expensive and I want to try their food before I make a final call.

Simple & Decent food at Reasonable Price
(7/6/2006 11:34:46 AM)
I go to this place almost once a week these days.  It has more than 10 set entrees with side dishes.  The food tastes good and quite well presented.  More importantly, it's really not expensive.  It's only $6 ~ $7 per dish and it comes with soup or iced black/green tea.  It's pretty good for a quick bite.

The only turn-off is the lack of convenient parking space.  I usually park across the street or the underground parking of Crystal mall.

Hot food & waitresses
(6/22/2006 2:24:12 PM)
Just visited this place last night to this relatively new Joey's Tomato on Broadway.  Even though they don't take reservations, the line up was not too bad and they served us samples while we were waiting.
We tried their Crab & Artichoke, Ahi Tuna Taco, Grilled Steak, and Lamb Chop.  They all tasted pretty good, especially the artichoke & taco.  They are the best I have ever had.  The steak & lamb were just well cooked but nothing spectacular.

We also order a pitcher of Bellini.  It was very fresh and full of taste of peach.  It was tasty and quite good looking.

Last but not least, the waitresses were pretty hot as expected!

Bin 942
(6/11/2006 3:01:28 PM)
I haven't been to this restaurant for more than 3 years.  I went back last Saturday and I find it as good as before.  They have some new items on the menu, like Black Cod with Pumpkin, Portobello Mushroom stuffed with sunflower seed crusted goat cheese, Scallop and Tiger Prawn tournedos, etc.

I tried the Black Cod, Portobello Mushroom, Crab Cakes, Goat cheese oven dried tomato salsa & navajo fry bread.  Salsa & Bread and Crab Cakes are still my favorites!  They are SO YUMMY!  May be it's just me, I didn't like the mix of the black cod and pumpkin.  Otherwise, the black cod is well cooked.  The portobello mushroom was just okay.  The mix of the mushroom and goat cheese didn't strike me.

Anyways, the dinner was not bad.

Ramen x Ramen
(6/1/2006 1:48:18 PM)
Here is another review for this restaurant.  The best Ra-men in the city.  Even though they have super long line-up everytime I go there, it's worthwhile.  Their cheese ramen has been the long time favorite of my female friends...

Keg Caesars
(5/28/2006 3:01:16 PM)
I have been to this place for lunch many times.  It's food is okay in general.  It's not a bad place to go for lunch with your boss when he pays for the bill.

Unfortunately, I am not very impressed with their service.  One of the servers accidentally poured the whole plate of chicken strip on my back (frankly, it was not a piece of steak and had no sauce).  I thought he would eliminate that dish from the check, but he didn't.  I think I won't go back to this place for a LONG while.

Octopus's Garden
(5/7/2006 1:58:15 PM)
I have always wanted to try this restaurant out.  I finally went there with my gf during the weekend.  This is a small & trendy Japanese Izakaya restaurant.  It's actually pretty cool that they have a boat in the middle of the dining room that can fit two people.  Frankly, we arrived early enough and got to eat on the boat!

Okay, let's get down to business - the Food!  We tried the following dishes:

Sashimi Appetizer:
The sashami was very fresh, but the portion is a bit too small

Scallop Medalion:
This was the signature dish of the night.  The huge scallop is stuffed with spinach and grilled for about 15 ~ 20 mins (I saw them cooking the scallop).  It's taste SO GOOD!

Ninga Roll:
Soft-shell crab sushi roll.  very yummy!

Stir Fried Udon with Clams
:
The way that it is presented actually surprised me in some way.  They didn't mix the clams with the udon, instead they placed the udon in the middle of the plate and surround it by clams in shells.  It's tasty and the portion was actually pretty good.

To be honest, the food was actually pretty good.  The reason that I didn't give this restaurant a 5-fork rating because it's pretty expensive and the portion of the food is pretty small.  They also offer a tasting menu, called OMAKASE course, but the $35/person one that is shown on their website was not available on their restaurant menu anymore.  That's why I still prefer Shiru-bay.

High Tea, Fine Tea
(5/1/2006 10:43:01 AM)
I have finally come here for my first high tea experience.  The experience was great.  I tried their High Tea menu with 3 tiers of mini-sandwiches & desserts and tea.  As for tea, I tried their Jasmine Dragon Tear & my gf tried their Secret Garden Secret.  The Jasmine was good just to drink it without any milk & sugar, just like other chinese tea.  The Secret Garden Secret smells very good and tastes very smooth.  The sandwiches & desserts are great as well.  They are tiny yet full of variety.  It is more than enough for a great brunch.

Actually, it should deserve a 5-fork rating, but b/c I didn't make a reservation (my bad!!), I had to wait for about an hour.  Although it's worth the wait, I still can't give them a 5-fork rating this time... (sorry!!! I am bias...)

Learn from my lesson, make sure you guys make a reservation

Stuffed by Great Malaysian Food!
(4/16/2006 12:53:10 AM)
I came back to this restaurant over the weekend since my last visit 3 years ago.  It has again stuffed me by great Malaysian food!  Here are the dishes I tried:

Chicken, Lamb, and Pork Satay Skewers - It's not super special, but the Chicken and Pork were done pretty well.  Not TOO well done.  The Lamb was just okay.  I guess it's just because the quality of the lamb they chose was not the best cuts.

Roti Canai
- Malaysian version of naan bread with currey.  Tasty but won't get you stuffed.  It's a pretty good appy.

Braised Lamb Shank in Cumin & Star Anise
- It's not bad, but not the best braised lamb shank I have ever had.  Same problem with the Lamb Skewers, which is b/c of the quality of the lamb.  Also, the sauce was tasty but a bit too watery.

Grilled Alaskan Black Cod in Banana Leaf with Sambal Sauce
- This is the best dish of the meal.  Quite a interesting mix of Sambal sauce and black cod.  The fish was quite fresh and well made, not too dry.  I like it.

By the way, I am eating the leftover while I am typing this review! YUMMY!

Nice Roast Lamb & Wine at very affortable prices.  If you are NOT too hungry and the line up is NOT too long (depends which day and what time you arrive), the line up part is actually not too bad.

Long story in short, this is such a great place for an inexpensive dinner with decent food quality!

Yummy Casual Lounge
(4/3/2006 10:13:19 PM)
Habit is one of the casual but trendy lounges/restaurants opened on Main St. recently.  I just tried it out with my friend last nite.  Among the two of us, we had a bottle of rose sparkling wine, duck ragu, spinach portobello mushroom beef brochette, and, the highlight of the nite, curry lamb shephard's pie.  SUPER YUMMY!!!

Quilon Restaurant
(4/1/2006 12:28:59 PM)
I finally tried this restaurant last night.  It was more casual than I expected.  Here is the detail of my experience:

Food:
The food is pretty nice.  Not too spicy and very well marinated & cooked.  I tried their Village Dinner, which includes Salad, Tandoori Chicken, Peas, Chicken, and Beef with Naan bread & Galum Jamun (dessert).  I also ordered their appy combo, an extra place of Galum Jamun, and Chai Tea.  They were all pretty good!! :-)

Price:
We were SO STUFFED and it only costed us around $30.  It's such a GOOD deal.

I am pretty surprised to have such a decent Indian restaurant in Richmond.  I will definitely go back again!

It's a pretty good place for MEAT LOVER!  I went there for lunch and felt so regret that I had TOO much salad up front.  I should have just sat there and waited for the Roasted Beef, Roasted Lamb, Sasuage, Chicken, etc.

Hmmmm... Yummy Roasted Beef (a bit bloody)!!!

George - Ultra Lounge and Wine Bar
(3/27/2006 10:58:17 PM)
My friends and I went there for drinks on last Saturday night.  Although there was a little bit of line-up outside, I am quite impressed that they have heated lamp from ceiling to keep us warm.

The crowd was more dressier and a bit more mature than the usual crowd we see at clubs and pubs, which is very nice b/c I like dressing up and people that dress up!!

The place was SO PACKED and we had some trouble finding a place to seat in the first 1/2 hour, but we somehow managed & luckily that we found a spot that we could fit 6 of us there.  According to my best female friend, the bartenders were cute!! I think the waitresses were not bad either (she didn't care about that)!

The drinks were mixed nicely and not like the usual Vancouver style (too much water, too little vodka).  We sat there from 11pm to 2am.  I don't think any of us can remember the # of drinks we had.  We all lost count.  Surprisingly enough, the damage was not too bad.  It only costed us $40~$50 per person.

Anyhow, we didn't have the time nor have the ability to figure that out at that time.  We paid the bill with a big tip and left to a chinese restaurant nearby to get sober up.

Long story in short, this is a GREAT PLACE for drinks for any occasion.  The only reason that it didn't deserve a 5-fork rating is because it wouldn't have been so good if we were not lucky enough to find a seat.

I will definitely go back again!!!

Fabulous Noodle House
(3/21/2006 10:00:51 AM)
I recently went back to this restaurant and tried it out.  I had the lamb cutting noodle and my friend had the beef cutting noodle.  They are both very good.  We also had the Spicy Beef Lung.  OMG! I like it!!! I don't eat spicy food very often, but it was JUST so good that I almost wanted to order another dish.  I will definitely go back again!! :-)

Terrible Service
(3/17/2006 2:20:18 PM)
Ridiculously Bad!!! My coworkers and I went to this restaurant today for lunch.  It took at least 20 mins for the waitress to come and take our order.  And then, it took more than an hour for us to get all our food.  During the wait, we asked for tea 4 times and food 3 times.  They either ignored us or said, "The food is coming".

Eventually, we got to talk to the manager and asked for what was going wrong.  She said, "it's like this every Friday.  We are always under staff every Friday."  I was like... errr... I don't think this is an acceptable excuse!!  Thank you!! I am not coming anymore!! Nice try!! !

MoMo Sushi
(3/8/2006 4:59:05 PM)
I went there for lunch with my coworkers today.  We tried their lunch boxes with Salmon Sashimi, Teriyaki Chicken and Tempura, and Goma-ae & Tamago Nigiri on the side.  They are all pretty good.  Fresh sashimi & sushi, nice sauce for Goma-ae, and great deal for a lunch box.  It's almost comparable to Chiyoda with the same price range as Urban Sushi.  I will definitely go back again if it didn't rain as hard as today.

Osaka Today
(3/7/2006 10:02:40 AM)
I went there for dinner with my friends last week.  I guess I went there a bit too late (around 7:30pm), they ran out some of the interesting dishes that I wanted to order, especially their Udon.  it's okay! The food was pretty decent and service was good. I will go earlier or call to reserve in advance! :-)

Yummy Veal
(3/2/2006 6:10:49 PM)
I went there for lunch with my coworkers the other day.  I tried their Braised Veal Shank!! OMG!! It's ALMOST comparable to the Braised Lamb Shank I had at Hart House during dine out!!  It would be better it was softer, although it's pretty soft already.  The juice & sauce was great!!  Also the potato on the side is stuffed with ground beef, interesting eh!?

My coworker tried their Chicken Schnitzel.  She claims that it's the best she has ever had.  I haven't tried it, but I think it must be pretty good!!!

Anyways, I am just surprised that I can have something really nice for lunch.

Yummy & Funky
(2/27/2006 9:52:37 AM)
This is the first restaurant I tried out after the dine-out event.  This is cool and funky Japanese restaurant.  It has a huge TV inside and outside playing Japanese animations, a very colorful theme color inside, and some fish and octopus hanging from the roof.  Sounds quite special for a Japanese restaurant, right?

As for their food, both the quality and portion are pretty good! I tried and liked their Erotica Roll,  Drunken Monkey Roll, and Fat Elvis.  Also, their Mixed Seafood Okonomiyaki was tasty with seaweed and mayo sauce.  This one is my favorite!

I will definitely go back again!

Great Food on a Messy Nite
(2/15/2006 11:25:15 AM)
It's the 1st time I go back to this restaurant after they changed their management/owner.  I went back for Valentine's dinner this time.  I will start talking about the good things first.

We had 2 hot and 2 cold apettizers.  The mixed green with dungeness crab meat was very good and fresh.  The seafood in crepe and camembert are super tasty!!!   We had AAA steak and rack of lamb for entree.  Although they were overcooked, they were kindly enough to re-make it again when we sent them back.  They taste pretty good at the 2nd time.

Here are the bad things: we waited more than 30 mins to be seated, it took them more than 30 mins to give us the first apettizers, the steak & lamb were overcooked for the 1st round, staff were not well-trained (they looked confused sometimes), the menu is not so French anymore, etc.

In general, it's not too bad except that it was super long dinner because of all the waitings.  I may go back again when they start running more smoothly.

I tried their Pad Thai and Stuffed Chicken Wings last week with my coworkers.  I like them very much.  The Pad Thai was very authentic and the Stuffed Chicken Wings were done very well and quite creative. I will definitely go back again.

Nice View & Romantic Atmosphere
(1/31/2006 11:55:28 AM)
Just visited the Beach House with a large group of friends last nite.  It's located at Dundarave Pier.  It has a very nice view and pretty warm & romantic atmosphere.  I am sure it would be a nice place for Valentine's Day or watching the sunset at the patio during summer.

The food was pretty good, not amazing yet.  I guess the view and ambiance can make up for the little disappointment from the food.  Surprisingly enough, I found the New York Steak was cooked very well.  It was not overcooked comparing to many other places.  Also, the Honey and vanilla poach aujou pears was not bad either.

A very nice restaurant in my neighbourhood
(1/30/2006 12:02:17 AM)
I went Hart House last week with my best friend for Dine out.  We ordered their Wild Mushroom & Seared Sea Scallops for appetizers, Baked Black Cod & Braised Lamb Shrank for entres, and Warm Cranberry and Pear Cobbler & Vanilla Scented Crème Brûlée for desserts.  My personal favorite was their scallops & lamb shrank.  They were cooked very very well.  The scallops were very fresh, a bit crispy outside and very juicy inside.  The lamb was braised very very soft.  I haven't had such a nice dish of lamb for a long time.  The last one I had was at Caffe de Medici.  I will definitely go back again.

Nu
(1/20/2006 2:11:54 PM)
I went this place for the Dine Out event last night.  The first things I was impressed were their decors and service.  They have pretty cool chairs, lounge tables, glass dividers, and lights in green or brown.  You can see their theme colors on their website.  Although they somehow messed up our reservation, we got free drinks & tasting appetizers.  That was pretty good!

I tried their dine out menu and some of my friends tried some items from their regular menu.  The "Roasted Cepes Mushroom Soup" was okay.  It was a bit bland.  It would be better if the taste was a bit more stronger.

My entre, Duck Legs, was braised very soft.  I got two of them.  One of them was a bit bland as well, but the second one was good (maybe they are from different pots!?).  My friends tried the Seared Mosaic of Wild Salmon, Flat Iron Steak, and Crispy Braised Pork Belly.  They all look and taste pretty good.  My personal favorite is the Pork Belly.  It's a MUST try!!!

As for desserts, they gave one of our friends an extra dessert b/c she didn't order one, where other of us did.  I had their Warm Apple and Almond Pitivier and it was not bad and quite special.  But I like the Creme Brulee that my friends had.  It was one of the BEST Creme Brulee I have ever had.  They did a very good job on the surface and the creme inside was SO soft & smooth.  Try it out!!!

The prices of items on their regular menu & wine list are actually VERY affortable.  I am sure it's a really nice dating place b/c it has pretty nice view as well.

Gallery Cafe and Catering
(1/16/2006 9:49:21 AM)
I tried this place out yesterday for an exhibition.  This is a very classy cafe.  The food was not bad.  They look very fancy.  If it was not rainning, I would love to sit at the patio.  However, I find it's a bit too pricy.  It's even more expensive than the Bread Garden for the similar type of food.

Urban Sushi

This is my favorite lunch place.  Almost every Wed with my coworkers.  They have very fast service and decent quality of food for a reasonable price in downtown.  They are very busy during lunch hour.  If you want to dine in, make sure you go a bit early.

Lemon Grass
(1/9/2006 12:31:03 AM)
I went there for dinner last week.  I tried their lemon grass chicken with shredded pork.  It was pretty good.  The service was a bit slow.  They gave us a 10% discount b/c it's their grand opening promotional period.

Chiyoda
(1/4/2006 2:37:24 PM)
I went there for lunch with coworkers today.  The lunch boxes were amazing!!  They were presented nicely, the fish that was used for sushi was wild salmon & fresh tuna, well cooked tempura, and served with teriyaki chicken & rice.  I tried their Salmon Teriyaki Lunch Box.  It was SO GOOD!! The salmon was well cooked and has  crab meat salad, tofu, potato cake, and rice on the side.  Yummy!!!! The service was not bad too! I will definitely go back again!

My friends and I held a X'mas party at this place last week.  The deal and the food was not bad.  I quite like their Hommos & Smoked Salmon Steak.  Unfortunately, the roasted lamb was a bit too dry b/c they had to make sure all 80 dishes had to go out at once.  I am sure it would be a nice &  casual dinner though.

Foundation, The
(12/23/2005 1:52:36 PM)
It's a great place! Acturally, I heard a bit about this restaurant saying that its service sucks before I went.  However, that's NOT TRUE!  Their service is pretty good! I love their decors on the wall & the 60s - 70s style tables & chairs.

My friend and I ordered the appetizer platter and took the recommendation from our server, we ordered the black bean & peanut butter spinach pasta.  They were SO GOOD and in HUGE portion as well.  This place is a must try for veggie lovers!!

Chianti Cafe & Restaurant

They have special on Monday & Tuesday.  Many of the dishes are 1/2 price or something.  They also have the BEST Tiramisu in town.  It serves in a whisky glass and has a strong whisky taste in the Tiramisu! It's my favorite! :-)

Yoshoku Ya Restaurant
(12/1/2005 11:58:17 AM)
I have been to this restaurant "N" number of times.  It has the best price for the quality of food they serve.  Their deep fried prawn with cocktail dipping, curry chicken, New York steak, and Soy Sauce Mushroom Chicken are my favorites!!  It's a MUST try if you are around that area.  Make sure you go a bit earlier or prepare to line up on the weekend.

Caffe de Medici
(11/17/2005 3:48:38 PM)
I just went to their 26th Anniversary event recently.  It's pretty good! I had the same wine I had during the dineout event in the beginning of the year and tried the Veal Loin on their $26 menu.  They were both excellent, especially the sauce they used for the Veal Loin (I am mouth-watering again while I am writing this review).  My friend had the salmon with angel hair, it's pretty good as well.  They have this event until the end of the month.  It's a MUST try!!!

Kisha Poppo Japanese Restaurant
(11/14/2005 9:52:02 PM)
I went there for my friend's b-day.  Their food is okay for an All-you-can-eat restaurant.  Just like most of the chinese owned restaurants, the service level @ this place is quite minimal.  Although I didn't have a very good experience personally, they tried to make up for it by giving us a discount.  I may go back if my friends want to go again (I am not a fan of all-you-can-eat).

Hippo Cafe
(11/11/2005 4:34:03 PM)
I checked out this cafe recently.  I am quite disappointed.  It took them almost 15 mins to give us one drink on a quiet night.  They also didn't have 90% of the desserts on their menu.  Moreover, their Orange Tart (the only one they have) was hard like a piece of stone.  Nonetheless, the owner gave us a discount to make me a bit less pissed.  I may go back and give them one more chance.

I tried this restaurant during dineout event and went back again one month after.  It was GREAT!  They have a very cozy and warm decor.  I tried their set dinner.  It had all the best dishes in very nice portion.  Their dessert "galum jamun" is my favorite.  It's a MUST try for people that LOVE desserts! :-)

Hapa Izakaya
(10/23/2005 12:37:58 AM)
I tried this restaurant 2 years ago.  As Miss Piggie said, it's not a place to keep going back.  It's cool the first I went there, but it is out shot by Shiru-bay because Shiru-bay is not as noisy, it takes reservation, and it is a bit more casual than Hapa.  Anyways, the food is still pretty good @ Hapa.  It's nice to try it at least once.

Lift Restaurant

Great View!! I was there twice for drinks during the summer.  The view was EXCELLENT!  They have a pretty nice wine list and have very good service.  When I went back on my second time, I wanted to have have the same Spanish wine I had on previous time.  They couldn't find it and they recommended me another more expensive Spanish wine for the same price as the one I wanted.  That's what I call Good Service!!

That's right!! Good memory!

You just reminded me that they actually gave me the bill before I asked for it! Although it was about 30 ~ 45 mins after I finished desserts, but still!!!

sigh.... I hope they are not like that during regular nights.

I tried this restaurant recently in the taste of yaletown event.  The Pork Tenderloin & the Gennaro's signature cheesecake in phyllo ARE really good!! However, the servers were a bit too cool on that night  I guess it's b/c it's too busy on that night!?

Anyways, it was not bad in general.  Anybody else tried it during the taste of yaletown event as well?  And, how does it compare to the regular nights?

Accents Restaurant
(9/30/2005 10:04:47 PM)
I tried the Accent Restaurant recently! I have to say, this is my first and excellent experience of Russian food. It's not so formal and very cozy. The waitos and waitresses are very friendly. They actually recommended us a pretty good red wine (sorry, I forgot what's the name of the wine already. I only remember it was one of the first Italian wines).

I would totally recommend the Mushroom cap and Chicken Kiev. They are SO GOOD!!!! Did I forget to mention the live music? We were pretty lucky that there was some event going on that night. They ordered for live music. It was so nice as well. The waitor told me that they usually have some events that order for live music on weekends. If you want it to be romantic, you will have a better luck if you go there during weekend.

Shiru-Bay Chopstick Cafe
(9/29/2005 11:30:54 PM)
If you like trendy Japanese food, you don't want to miss Shiru-Bay
Chopstick Cafe. It's relatively new restaurant is located in Yaletown.
I first tried it last summer when it first opened. Since then, I have
gone back 3 times already. I don't usually go back to one place unless
it's REALLY REALLY good!

The first thing I tried was their green tea. You may ask, what so
special about green tea in a Japanese restaurant? My answer is: You've
got to try this one. The green tea they serve is not those ones that
taste like water in regular Japanese restaurants. They seve it in a
little cute pot that has real green tea leaves inside and you can
adjust how strong or light you want your tea. It's pretty cool!

They have pretty good service as well. When they grill the Mackerel in
front of you, you can decide how do you want your fish. Just ask tell
them if you want it relatively raw or cooked.

Anyways, it's a great restaurant for dating too! Wish you have a good
date!!

Red Door
(9/29/2005 11:28:15 PM)
I tried the new fusion restaurant Red Door - Pan Asian Grill tonight.
It was pretty good. It's a cozy and trendy place to hang out with
friends for casual dinner or drinks.

The food is very Asian style but packaged in a very modern/western way.
The Pad Thai and the Banana Spring Roll are really good! Smile

Go and try it out!
