great service, great food
(8/28/2006 12:57:45 PM)

i've been to abigail's a few times now and the service is always impeccable.  the girls are super friendly and one of them remembered me the 2nd time I went to the restaurant.

on my previous visits, i didn't really try many of the items on the menu.  mainly just came to abigail's for drinks and a light snack.  the braised short rib burger is really quite good. it is also a staple order for me every time i'm there.

last night though, i ventured to try more of the menu items.  i have discovered that their pulled beef tacos are absolutely amazing.  they're actually made from braised beef tongue... might sound gross to some, but it was so yummy. the taco shells themselves are made of crispy baked parmesan cheese.  absolutely delish.

i also discovered the duck confit quesadilla.  papaya brie cheese with figs and duck.... drooling, just thinking about it.

i am definitely looking forward to heading back to abigail's soon for more beef tacos and duck quesadillas.

yummy blue cheese fries & nice patio
(7/31/2006 5:22:53 PM)

yet another earl's/cactus club like establishment... crazy line ups, young, attractive staff, the usual fare on the menu.  Joey's is great because it is new.  the decor is tasteful and is in the same style as the earl's paramount.  actually i can't really tell the difference between the two restaurants come to think of it. Joey's does boast a beautiful and very large patio.  comfortable booth seating along the edges and a good mix of shade and sun.

food was pretty good. a lot of cliche asian flavours like ginger and soya sauce, and sweet chilli garlic sauces.  good if you're not asian, tiresome and unauthentic if you are.  prices are a touch expensive.  appy/tapas ranging around the $12-15 for a plate of dry ribs, which were juicy and meaty, but not my favourite in the city. don't think i'd order them again (even though i'm a dry rib fiend).  sweet chilli chicken was surprisingly good because the white meat was done very juicy and tender.  sauce was typical and uninventive though.

the highlight of my lunch was definitely the blue cheese fries. Macdonald's like fries drizzled with crumbled blue cheese sauce.  beyond pints of guiness, the fries alone will warrant another visit in the near future from me.

great tapas...

The Place:
Dropped by Bin941 for a girls' night last week.  As usual, the tiny place was packed (and they take no reservations).  We did our token wait at the back with a few glasses of wine perched on stools pressed up against the wall in the narrow hallway by the washrooms.  Not the best of waiting areas... but what can you do? The room is long and narrow and very small.  People are practically stacked on top of each other with barely any room to walk down the pathway.  Definitely not the most comfortable restaurant to be in.  The decor is eclectic and funky, giving the place a unique feel to it.  The music was unfortunately a bit too loud that I felt like I was in a club screaming into the ear of the person next to me.

The Food:
We ordered the gathered greens, mussels in curry sauce, digby scallops & tiger prawns, and the Wentzel duck breast.

The gathered greens were fresh and served with great presentation -- the greens were tossed in dressing first then stacked neatly one leaf on top of another to create a salad tower. Very interesting, easy to share.

The mussels in curry  sauce were amazing.  I usually have the saffron broth & chorizo (which is also stellar), but the curry sauce was so good, we had to order extra bread to soak it up (and I started sipping it like soup.)

The scallops and prawns were uneventful. not good, not bad, just not memorable.  They tasted exactly as scallops and prawns always taste.  Nothing special.

The duck breast was amazing!!!  Very tender, skinless, sliced thinly serveed with a plum or apple like sauce.  I didn't want to share the plate! it was seved with a crispy potato pancetta. Needless to say, the three of us cleaned that plate off, duck, potato, garnish, sauce... every last drop & morsel.

Overall, the food is yummy, the atmosphere fun, just a tad pricey for tiny tapas dishes... they seem to have raised the prices on their menu as most items are now $15/ tapa.  I look forward to going back soon.

Sha Lin Noodle House
(12/6/2005 3:12:20 PM)
This is one AMAZING restaurant. Great deal and very authentic northern Chinese cuisine.  I was in Beijing earlier this year and they serve the same food.  So good.  Four of us managed to slip in right before closing and dinner costed $40!! and we still packed half the meal to go!! Dishes to try are:

Cutting noodles in soup w/ lamb:  these are the neatest noodles.  The chef takes a block of dough and you watch him scrape the noodles off one at a time as they fly into the pot of boiling soup.  the soup is a clear broth that soaks up the lamb taste.  Lots of cilantro for extra flavouring... so good, drooling as I'm typing.

Flat Clear Rice Noodles in peanut sauce w/ cucumber & chicken:  Not exactly sure I got the name of the dish right... These noodles are served cold. They're great for the summer (but I'll even eat them in the winter)  The noodles are like vermicelli, only they're wide and flat.  They are mixed with a little vineagar and soy sauce and peanut sauce.  They throw in shredded cucumber and chicken.  Great refreshing taste.

Deep fried steamed buns w/ condensed milk:
Technically everything tastes good with condensed milk, but this is an awesome treat.  Soft steamed bread with a gold brown crispy shell... yumm... you might want to ask for more condensed milk... and do try not to double dip... it's rude!

This place gets super busy for lunch and whatnot all the time.  Definitely one of the best Chinese restaurants outside of Richmond area.

yups... great company, good time, bad food... BOO!
(12/6/2005 11:29:24 AM)
hahaha... thanks for the flattery Nels.  dinner was definitely not very good... i'm quite disappointed.  so sorry, it was my choice.  I used to love this place, been there so many times... but for some funny reason, the food was terrible last night.  Nels gave the play-by-play dish reviews above so I'll skip those details.

The food was not particularly hot.  Cold, not so yummy food, is just not good for the tastebuds. Stay away from the Chorizo!  it's flambe'd which means burnt to a crisp (to think I love chorizo too...).  Chicken livers in the past have been awesome.  Great for dipping bread into the sauce.  Bad thing is... they actually charge you for Bread and Butter!! Albeit a measly 90 cents per person... but all the same... why not,  just make it complimentary!!

the place was super quiet (after all it was a Monday) and for music, they were playing Moby!  I love Moby, he's my all time favourite, BUT I've always loved Latin Quarter for their authentic feel.  I once said that if you sit with your back to the windows, you feel as if you've been transported to some little foriegn cafe.  they usually have a live band playing flamenco tunes. i understand no live band on a Monday night, but at least play something a little more appropriate for the ambience.

Disappointment at one of my previously favourite restaurants... won't be going back there or recommending it to anyone any time soon...  BOO!! I'm going to stick to La Bodega... similar food, but SO MUCH BETTER!!

Just read LotusRapper's review... damn to think that Stella's was actually our other choice...

Good but not Great...
(10/26/2005 5:59:07 PM)
the food is definitely not bad... though some of the skewers seemed a little "overcooked". there are some innovative items, but the menu pretty much consists of all skewers.. and very small ones too. so if you're looking for a hearty meal... maybe not the best place.

Things to try: the tzukune (there's about 10 different ways they make this chicken meatball), the quail egg wrapped in sliced pork and THE awesome new discovery was... damn i can't remember what it was called... it was sticky rice wrapped with cheese on a skewer (something mochi maki).  SO GOOD!

Might go back again if I happen to be in the area... but if i'm specifically hungry for skewers...Manzo on Alexander Road in Richmond is stil my favourite.

overhyped, overcrowded
(10/22/2005 4:16:59 PM)
this place came highly recommended... i went once, never went back. menu is innovative, but not particularly yummy.  too busy, line ups too long for my liking... much prefer shiru-bay (yaletown) or classic gyoza king (robson)...

good by richmond standards
(10/22/2005 4:13:51 PM)
i agree that it is rare to find a trendy resto-lounge smack in the middle of richmond-chinatown.  i honestly had very big doubts about this place when it first opened, and didn't think that it would last long... but not only is it still around, it keeps improving.  so kudos to Also.  the live jazz performer was definitely a treat. she had a beautiful voice, though the movie screen with japanese anime on the opposite wall seemed a little out of place. the food is an interesting mix... they have everything! from kobe steak, to thai chicken, to lobster bisque. eclectic fusion i tell you. good quality of food. for richmond, it is definitely a treat... though still has a bit to go when compared to other places of its kind in the downtown/kits area.

yummy beef brisket in clear soup!
(10/9/2005 4:08:48 PM)

that's right, outside of richmond, this has to be the best hk style cafe. love their hainanese chicken laksa and the beef brisket in clear broth noodles... casual, but still good service (unlike richmond cafes... ) good place for fast and yummy eats!

WARNING!! DO NOT EAT!!
(10/9/2005 4:00:01 PM)

UGH!!! and more UGH!!! what a waste of a beautiful location. Absolutely beautiful view of  kits beach, sitting RIGHT on the beach, half the restaurant is a deck... atmosphere is wonderful... but OH MY GOD the food is LOUSY!! had the octopus carpaccio... first of all it was stuck to the plate, had to SCRAPE it off with my fork... and it looked and tasted like it was days old and had been sitting in the fridge pre-made. The halibut was overcooked, unfresh and slimy... and service... could be much better.

the only "fresh" ocean taste you get in this restaurant is the breeze that comes through the windows. STAY AWAY FROM THE FOOD. if you want a romantic place for drinks with a good view where people will leave you alone... (including the servers), by all means give it a try.  But considering how expensive the place is... could think plenty of better things to do with my money...

solid french food
(10/9/2005 3:51:13 PM)

was at Pastis years ago... and i remember thinking it was quite good.  But nothing really jumped out at me.  A really solid conservative restaurant that you can definitely count on.  But for repeat visits... rather boring, if you ask me, not to mention expensive.

mind you, given Ante's review above (which is probably much more recent than mine), seems like i should revisit Pastis again to see what's changed... (now that i'm making more $$ too!!)

Red Door
(10/2/2005 9:19:33 AM)

While Red Door in many ways seems to be fake oriental food... I have to say, even though i'm not a big fan of fusion, it's a pretty neat restaurant.  The atmosphere is really nice. Very RED and sexy chic but still casual without being TOO TOO pretentious.  All in all an easy restaurant to bring people to that's not too adventurous, but still exotic and most importantly, it's relatively easy on the wallet.

Dish to try... Shakin' Beef... absolutely amazing!!! slurp... and i agree wtih taro's comment above... yummy banana spring rolls... not too sweet, not too heavy, just the perfect dessert

Guu with Garlic
(10/2/2005 9:14:20 AM)

I disagree... long wait... food is ok... not my favourite izakaya for that kind of wait... I'm a loyal fan of Gyoza King on Robson.

I've been to the Guu chain of restaurants only once... and never went back again... if that means anything. the atmosphere just isn't as warm as Gyoza King. maybe i'm just being biased...
