Excellent food and good staff!
(9/22/2007 1:53:31 PM)
I've been to Posh about 6-7 times since May and I find the experience to be good every time.  The dining space is much more smaller than other restaurants so there is more attentive customer service.  Most of their staff definitely have a "can-do" attitude and this contributes to a very positive experience.  They are having an introductory rate of $14 for dinner or $10 for lunch right now and have a limited menu.  However, they don't try to do too much so the food is of better quality.  I frequently add water into my hot pot bowl or it is too salty but other than that it is very good.  Be prepared to be crowded at one of their longer tables if you have a smaller party of 2 or 4 but it's a great time to be had by all.

They use gas stoves for cooking so it is often the case that during your meal you will need to have the gas canister replaced once or twice. However, they are pretty fast once you let them know so it's good.

Hidden, but delicious!
(8/9/2006 10:10:53 AM)
Candia Taverna serves delicious Greek Food in the Sasamat area. Their menu features large portions of food at reasonable prices (a big plate that can be shared by 2 somewhat hungry people for 12 dollars).

They also serve Ouzo but it's pricey at ~4 dollars a shot.

You will love the atmosphere which is both cozy and unique. The staff is friendly and most importantly, the food is delicious. The desserts are rumored to be made by the staff in the kitchen rather than bought in.

One of the better All You Can Eat places in the city!
(8/9/2006 9:33:14 AM)
Tomokazu is one of the better AYCE places in Vancouver. The reason for that? A wide variety of sashimi selections for dinner.
What's more is their varying sushi selection including: Abalone sushi, lobster sushi and shark fin sushi and rolls such as the soft-shell crab roll.

If you get a good sitting spot in the restaurant it can get cozy even though the restaurant feels very open. The service at their AYCE dinner is absolutely fantastic (many times did they come to pour tea/add water when not flagged down or asked to specifically).

Lunch/Late-night are also good deals but the golden ticket is the AYCE Dinner which offers variation, friendly service and good food.

Definitely try it once if you have not already and taken a break from Shabusen/Su Shi ya

Good food & drinks at great prices
(8/4/2006 4:06:28 PM)
The Frog & Firkin is an English neighborhood restaurant which has good drinks and food for reasonable prices.
They will always have drinks on special (Friday night is Rickard's and China White and Jagermeister shots). They also have a specials menu with varying dishes changing.

The atmosphere is very comfy and most of the servers are fantastic.
The food is good for English food. They have a large variety of appetizers, burgers, salads and other entrees.

I would recommend the Barbeque Half Chicken for $11.95. In addition to the BBQ Half Chicken, there is fries and onion tangles which can be change to a salad if desired.
They also have Mussels available with the sauces changing occasionally. The last one I had (which was in a sweet curry sauce) were delicious and somewhat light. You get a big bowl of mussels stacked high for $9.99.

In terms of Appetizers, I would recommend the Nachos (which come in full and half orders), the Onion Tangles (with their Firkin dip) and their sweet potato fries (which are delicious with the sauce).

I would not recommend the Calamari because it's not consistent and is sometimes soggy. Get some Calamari from a Greek place instead.

Fantastic view, professional service, good food
(8/4/2006 3:58:51 PM)
We went up to Horizons for a friend's birthday and we are glad it worked out for the 30+ people that went. The view is amazing but once the sun set it was sorta scary going back down the mountain.

The food was delicious but the service was impeccable despite our orders of wine and how loud we were in total.

Overall, the food was fantastic but I didn't find it was anything special in comparison to any downtown restaurants. This is one of those restaurants where the great view and great service is reflected in the price of the food.

Definitely a date place.

Hidden gem!
(8/4/2006 3:48:58 PM)
Overall Capricorn is really good. It has tons of different kinds of food at reasonable prices. The Swordfish at $15.95 is amazing and comes in a cream sauce with carrots, other vegetables and garlic bread.

From the outside, this place doesn't look very good but once you go inside, you will find very hip decor. On one side of the restaurant you can lounge in comfy chairs or otherwise sit in these awesome-looking (but not good on the back) wooden chairs.

I also had the Lamb chops last week and they were just as delicious that I was left wanting more.

The place is family owned and so there is a laissez-faire feeling with regards to service. However, if you come in early and you are waiting for others they will give you free watermelon slices because of the summer heat.

The only bad thing is because it is near the hospital most of the surrounding area has metered parking. The parking behind the restaurant also is pay. However, if you are willing to walk up/down the steep hill or walk 1 or 2 blocks away there is free parking.

They also have a website which you may want to add http://www.capricornonline.com/

Mad Greek Restaurant
(6/7/2006 3:13:58 PM)
I went to Mad Greek for my birthday earlier this year and surprise surprise, they had completely changed location down the street nearer to Richmond Hospital!

The newer location is much bigger and the higher ceilings are a welcome change of pace. We had a party of about 15.  The food wasn't as quick as I would have liked it but it was quite delicious. The waitresses were friendly and were quick to get us anything we needed. They were okay with the birthday cake someone had brought to put in the fridge and it was a good night, we were there for a couple of hours and the waitresses were always smiling.

As they were just opening, it was somewhat busy but I'm not sure what it is like now. The food is good (calamari and huge pieces of bread with tzaziki dip - yes I know it's filler but it's sooooooo good!!) , so I can't really say anything bad about it.

I would definitely take my friends here again. The only down side is there is not a lot of parking because ICON Karaoke shares a parking lot and there is little residential parking available nearby.

People are comparing this places with Stephos but I don't think you can really do that. It's like comparing all the places to Samurai Sushi and saying that all the other places have tiny miniscule sushi rolls. Stephos like Samurai are the exceptions. :D

Dentry's Irish Grill
(5/11/2006 1:02:49 PM)
Dentry's is nice. It's an alternative to the on-campus pubs at UBC. The food is pretty good and their wings are awesome. If you want the pubbing experience, this is the place to go.

Last time I went we had to call the waitress over, but she was nice and it was all good.

Kamikaze Japanese Bistro
(12/2/2005 11:59:54 AM)

Kamikaze is yummy! My favourite nigiri sushi is the avocado and crab sushi, tai sushi and chopped scallop sushi. The oyster motoyaki at this place actually has more than the oyster and the sauce (also comes with a bit of vegetable and mushrooms). All in all, this is a great place to come late at night to enjoy some cheaper food. The waiter on Thursday evenings is usually pretty nice and te restaurant is about 1/2 full. You don't need to flag the waiter down for more tea or to order because he's always there when you need him. Plus, they show "Iron Chef" on the TV or the "'nucks Game" on the TV which adds to the enjoyment.

Definitely a nice quaint place to eat at.

Hamilton Street Grill
(12/1/2005 4:26:06 PM)

I finally had a chance to go to Hamilton Street Grill last weekend. I had the Fish and Chips for dinner which cost $18. The sweet potato fries were quite long and yummy. Combined with the chipotle mayo sauce, they made a good side dish. The mixed salad was made quite well and I enjoyed every part of the salad. The bread that came before dinner was also delicious. The butter wasn't really melting though but *shrug* I'd rather have it that way than at a dangerous temperature.

I was unfortunately disappointed by the cornmeal crusted halibut. It was tiny in comparison to the other side dishes and it offered a reminder of fish I had experience eating at Asian tea restaurants (the cheaper restaurants). There was only 1 piece of halibut which again was tiny.

Other than the greatly disappointing fish, the atmosphere and the other parts of my meal were delicious. I did not order anything else but the chocolate fondue looked delicious. If I go back again I'll definitely try something else or something else with those delicious side dishes :)

Enigma Restaurant
(11/28/2005 9:50:53 AM)
Enigma is one of those nice restaurants that you can get a quick but nice lunch at by paying an affordable price. Check out their specials outside before you go in as they include interesting items like Potato Leek soup, steak sandwich and even curry. Lunch is about 15 dollars including both tax and tip for something that is both carefully prepared and delicious to eat. The restaurant is run by a family which used to run a South African bakery. The waitresses there are usually pretty nice. If you want to sit at the couches with the square tables, phone in advance as they are always full. All in all, this is a wonderful restaurant and I always enjoy going bussing off campus to have lunch there :)

Some Kinda Pasta
(11/23/2005 11:04:27 PM)
One of the better restaurants near the UBC campus for delicious food. Some Kinda pasta uses the freshest ingredients and it shows through the final product. Lunch pastas are $10** but they are the size of dinner pastas. I just had the Mussels & Clams with a Seafood Stock Reduction. It was incredibly delicious. The sauce was just the right combination. Not too watery, not too thick. Absolutely delicious!

The waitresses are always nice and the chef is quite dedicated. The daily stuffed pasta at lunch is 12 dollars which includes the stuffed pasta and an italian green salad. It is absolutely filling and quite healthy.

Overall, I absolutely love this place for its convenience to UBC and it's never too busy so the service is fantastic. It also has a very home-like feel.

**Since my last review, the lunch prices have gone up to $12

Taiwan Beef Noodle House
(11/18/2005 12:23:07 PM)
Mmm! Taiwanese Beef Noodles!

I came to this place once as I am at the Airport frequently doing some volunteering. My friend had the Taiwanese Beef Noodles and I had the dumplings. They were both delicious! Like all other restaurants like this, I was able to read the english and make out additional details with the Chinese. The dumplings arrived steaming hot and the juice was delicious. I burned my tongue slightly as I wanted those dumplings so badly. It's a good place and I haven't tried it at a really really late night (3am) time but I've been tempted to go there at 7:00am in the morning on the way to UBC to get some morning dumplings.

Delicious! :)

Kisha Poppo Japanese Restaurant
(11/18/2005 11:32:42 AM)
This place was okay when it first open but I have gone back for a year and a half because the last experience I had was very poor.

The customer service is not so good and they just come and slam the food down on your table and rush off. The food quality is okay, nothing impressive is sorta on par with the likes of sui sha ya.

There's a reason why my friends and I have nicknamed this place: "Kisha poo poo".

I'd rather drive the extra 8 mins away from Ironwood to the more centralized Richmond area to eat something decent.

Rico - Traditional Taiwanese Food
(11/5/2005 9:49:49 AM)
After a long break of not going to Rico I went last Thursday at 9:10pm. We didn't realize they were closing at 9:30pm but they politely took our order and served us our dumplings and 2 bowls of BBQ Sauce Beef Noodle Soup. It was delicious and hit the spot after a long day of hard work. When we paid at 10pm I didn't realize that they were to close at 9:30pm and the cashier indicated they wanted their customers to relax and enjoy their meal rather than be in a rush and it's not their way to kick out people. Washrooms were also very clean with a basket of scented potpourri. I don't know when they renovated but the food is fantastic and the place is kept clean so the food must be good to eat too :)

Feenie's
(11/4/2005 9:47:29 AM)
Feenie's is delicious but at a reasonable cost. Earl's and Milestones tend to hype up their food creations but include an Asian fusion cuisine element which I would not usually pursue as there is good Asian food elsewhere. The Feenie weenie, Feenie burger and Shepherd's pie is delicious if you're looking for some cheap to fill up your stomach while chatting with friends. The poutine is okay but it's not worth it to have a side order of it for 9 dollars but rather, it's more worth it to pair it with the burger and add 3 dollars more for poutine. Overall, Feenie's a nice place to go to and their patio is always full at lunch during the summer time. However, there is increasing competition from other places in the area which puts the pressure on Feenie's to perform.

The price is a little bit higher than the other restaurants around (Moderne Burger, White Spot) but it shows through somewhat in the quality of the food.

Flying Beaver Bar & Grill
(11/4/2005 9:31:39 AM)
fantastic hang-out place. This is one of those spots tucked out there by the south terminal at YVR. I used to go here after doing some stuff at the airport and it was great to hang out, have some drinks and eat their delicious snack food. I agree with the spinach dip being excellent.
they have a nice little covered patio with heat lamps to keep you warm during the night time or darker months. The place is packed in the evenings and there's even a fireplace in the center with couches which you can hang out at just as if you were home!
It's a Bar so of course, you must be 19+ to go in but the atmosphere is fantastic and the service is friendly :)

Samurai Sushi House
(11/4/2005 9:27:04 AM)
Mmmmm! The sashimi from Samurai is the biggest I've ever seen in this city! The food is really delicious and even the rolls are huge. For a bit of everything, try a half an order of the House Roll. You'll definitely be full and satisfied!

A party tray B for $20 is enough to feed 5 people for lunch. It's definitely a great deal and I've bussed over there from UBC just to get lunch/dinner.

They have free tea available too while you're waiting or having your meal.

Note that additional plates for takeout is 5 cents extra each if you're planning to take something out like a party tray.

I've never had a problem with an advanced order, it was usually ready 10-15 minutes before my designated time or about 5 minutes after the designated time. Of course, I usually go when they open so it doesn't get too too busy. It does get pretty busy around dinner and lunch times though (the place is packed with people waiting for take out or eating).

10% off if you order 1 day in advance
5% off if you order 2 hours in advance

I remember one time that 2 friends of mine and I bought a party tray but Samurai was completely packed so we brought the party tray b over to the Oakridge food court to eat it and buy drinks. People were looking at us funny but at least 1 person came up to us and asked: "Where did you get *that*?!" and we were like: "From across the street at Samurai!" and he dashed off to go find the huge sushi

Kintaro Ramen
(11/2/2005 10:17:37 AM)
Kintaro Ramen is one of the best places to eat Ramen in Vancouver. The shop is small so it fills up quickly. However, their ramen is to die for. Espescially the cheese ramen! I guess it's a woman's thing but I absolutely love it.
They also have a special called Forest Fire Ramen but this is only available on Saturdays - I have yet to try this special but I hear it's delicious.

I found this place originally while looking for a place with my friends to eat before clubbing. Definitely, this place is fantastic. The soup is at just the right temperature and all the flavors go together very well. Paired with a nice cold beer, it is perfect! :)

Cheesecake Etc.
(11/2/2005 10:12:42 AM)
Oh yes Cheesecake Etc.! I came here last time after eating at Rugby Club for 2 hours and we had decided none of the dessert's on Rugby's menu appealed to us. The cheesecake is a little bit pricier than what you pay for something you bought in a grocery store but the quality definitely shined through. My friends had a cappuccino too and they enjoyed their experience. This is definitely the place to be to chat though I found the music a little loud at times.

Very quaint place and very lovely. :)

Gyu Japanese Teppanyaki
(11/2/2005 10:10:36 AM)
I ate here with my significant other for Dineout Vancouver 2005 earlier this year. The chef we had was a bit older and he did not do anything too too fancy (a la Beverly Hills Ninja style tee hee) but it was delicious. We paid 25 dollars a person:

Appetizer:
Lobster Miso Soup
Salad (I think this was decorated with roe but I can't exactly remember now)

Main Course:
Prawns, scallops, squid, crab
Chicken, steak wrapped in this green stuff ( I think it was onion?!)

Dessert:
Green Tea ice cream

Overall for the price, the food was delicious and we really enjoyed the experience. The chef was very professional and courteous. I did not need the fancy tricks to be satisfied with my experience because the food was cooked excellently.

I am definitely going back for Dineout next year. Not sure about on a non-Dineout night though

Zakkushi Charcoal Grill
(10/30/2005 1:22:26 AM)
This place is delicious! It is a bit pricier than a regular restaurant as they specialize in Izakaya. Their skewers are the best!! If you do not know what you want in terms of skewers initially, get the set of skewers and you will be satisfied! The agedashi tofu is absolutely delicious. To fill up, I had this with a large bowl of don. Which don escapes me now. It worked out pretty well and I was full after that delicious meal.
They provided complimentary Miso soup at the end of the meal and they have you fill out a customer satisfaction survey including questions like: Best smile ?
I definitely recommend this place. Plenty of pay parking across the street! :) It can get pretty loud and crowded on the weekends though.
