Better Tasting, but how authentic is it?
(1/11/2010 3:52:44 PM)

There is a lot of Hype surrounding this restaurant...the proprietor is the Taiwan Beef noodle Champion.

Anyways, after a brief line up of 15-20 mins we were seated. Had to try the staple dish and was not disappointed. The soup tasted excellent and the noodles were just right.. They are generous with their portions of Beef as well. I have never tasted Taiwan Beef noodle soup in Taiwan so I cannot say this is like it "taste's back home"

Our side dish (green onion pancake) was a bit oily though.

The service is good and attentive for a Chinese Restaurant. They do push you to order quickly as there is a line up however.

In the end, gave it 4 forks, due to the higher price for a bowl of noodles compared to the competition i.e. Beefy Beefy Noodle and Wang's noodle house

Famous Hoi-Nam chicken
(8/24/2009 3:43:00 PM)

Tried the Aberdeen location and did not like it, but decided to give this one a try. Been there 3X and love it.

Famous dish is the Hoi-Nam Chicken, it's boneless here compared to other restaurants. Laska's are really good too..I don't like spicy food but they can make a mild version for you.

Must for Fresh Fish lovers
(8/24/2009 3:20:29 PM)

I cannot believe I have not tried this place even though I live so close to Granville Island.

We tried something off the fresh sheet and the famous Tacones.

Scallop Sandwich, $11 bit pricey but worth it for tender Scallops on a Portugese Bun.

Tacones are a mix of halibut, salmon and other fish served with sauce in a tortilla. A change from tacos.

Only negative is the long wait (35mins from line up to getting your food) but that is part of the fun. Maybe phone ahead to beat the line.

I would go back next to try their fish and chips.

One of the original Izakaya's
(8/10/2009 1:54:50 PM)

Way back before there were Izakaya's on every block, Gyoza king was the place to go for Japanese style tapas. It still is- I have been going here since their original location further south on Robson. I have seen many a tourist with their guidebooks dining here.

Overall atmosphere is less pretentious than Hapa Izakaya.  Cheaper too.

Have to try items are the Ebi Mayo, Yakitori and the Gyoza's of course.

Only minus is they don't accept large groups and you may have to wait for a table

go for the okonomiyaki
(4/27/2009 4:17:58 PM)

The Okonomiyaki here is more flavourful and better value than Modern Club. Sushi is just average though.

They accuse you of stealing!
(4/27/2009 4:13:15 PM)

Went here on the weekend as it was close by  the Cambie Street Fair. I took out a warm unopened bottle of water in my bag and placed it on the table. Waitress took our order and when she brought the food back, she said "did you take this from our cooler?" I replied, no I brought it from home. She then went to check the cooler...and gave me a really dirty look when she talked with the other waitresses. I told her look, this bottle is warm and your water is cold...but she just walked away rudely.

Noodles were overcooked too, btw.

Freshest Sashimi
(3/19/2009 2:02:44 PM)

This hole in the wall establishment has the freshest Sashimi. Another must have is the Tofu Steak.

Interior could use a major re-do but thats another story. The wait staff are friendly as well

One of the better Izakaya's in town
(2/19/2008 11:32:43 AM)

If you love Yakitori and other Skewers, this is definitely something you should try. Other dishes are good too, esp. the Japanese Porridge (Congee).

I rank this a close second, with Hapa being first!

There is now a new location on Main and King Ed!

Not as great as it once was
(10/29/2007 11:41:11 AM)

THIS RESTAURANT IS NOW CLOSED.

I tried this restaurant when it was more of a Tapas place, now they have changed the menu a bit.

Tapas are still good, however the mains have gone downhill. Ordered a Lamb Shank, it huge, lamb was tough, and it was overspiced. Pizza was ok, not as good as Steamworks or Italian Kitchen.

Once saving grace is the Martini's are still good and cheap.

Quite good, IMHO
(10/29/2007 11:34:20 AM)

If you are looking for old fashioned, old world Italian food, then you are in the wrong place. However if you are looking for more modern, clean well presented dishes then you have the right place.

We tried this place Sunday night with some friends, if you are noobs, try the platters, it gives you a good sampling. The dishes are well presented and the ambiance is very modern and chic. we also had a pizza, it was quite authentic.

I don't know what all the h8trs are talking about, but I found this place not bad. Like I said if you want old school Italian go to Chippinos or Amacord.

Best Japanese Restaurant in town.
(9/5/2007 12:27:49 PM)

Finally went to Tojo's for my birthday. We ordered off  the menu and were impressed by the quality of service, and presentation.

Sashimi is A1. Tried the Halibut Cheek, interesting dish, done chinese style. Tuna salad is nicely marinated in miso sauce.

The speciality here is the rolls, both the northern light and East meets west were tasty and very nicely done.

I will go back again for sure, and maybe try the omakase menu. I agree with Spazzo, the decor is not "stunning" like perhaps a yaletown/ coal harbour restaurant location, however the sake bar area is quite nice.

Good first time experience
(9/5/2007 12:21:57 PM)

Heard about this place from a co-worker and so went out on the on the labour day weekend to check it out.

The decor is modern, feels like an art gallery inside with all the artwork. Had 2 appys the Crisp wings and the asparagus salad. Wings were excellent, even better than Earls.

The shorty rigatoni was warm and cooked perfectly. The only thing that could use improvement was the drinks, the mojito's tasted watered down. Will definitely go back again.

don't bother
(8/30/2007 8:51:07 PM)

I was going to go to Kintaro to eat noodles on Monday night, but they are closed. So I decided to try the restaurant next door.

It was singlehandedly the WORST JAPANESE RESTAURANT I HAVE EATEN IN. Sashimi had bones in it. I complained to the staff and they didn't do anything. They get a 1 fork rating, cuz this website doesn't allow of 0/5.

Cook at home or eat at Mc'D's it's better

Terrible Service
(6/26/2007 3:55:27 PM)
Went out the other day to try the Richmond Jang Mo Jib. Asked for a refill of our sides twice and it never came. Place is super packed, but next time I rather drive downtown and experience better service.

Is the Commercial drive one better?
(5/14/2007 3:36:02 PM)

Had a pre-theatre meal at Lombardo's Downtown location. Wouldn't recommend going there.

The romaine lettuce seems like it was washed at lunch, salad was prepared and they threw it in the fridge and just scooped out a portion. to top it off, the leaves were still wet. I could make a better one at home.

The Linguine  a la vongole was made with frozen clams.  and still cost $14.

The only good thing is the pizza's good.

Is the commercial drive location better?  Cuz I'm not going back to this one!

Reopened !!!
(4/18/2007 4:26:33 PM)

Joint's been sold and new owners are taking over after renovations! Menu's been trimmed, but they have kept the simmered miso black cod! one must try is the square pressed sushi, battera! Also no longer open for lunch now, just dinner from 5pm onwards.

Pretty good first time experience
(2/12/2007 3:20:48 PM)

I heard so much about Chambar that I finally had to book and try it out.  Be warned, it's such a popular restaurant that they will cancel your reservation if you are late 10 minutes.

Aside from that, the decor is very "Soho" like and warm. Much better than Salt Tasting Room, but not as good as Brix.

Had 3 tapas and a main course. Coquille St.-Jacques , very good, scallops done just right.

Croustillant de canard confit et vin chaud ( Phyllo wrapped confit duck, spiced hot wine, cranberry & vanilla compote. ) - excellent, must try this! the spiced hot wine is served on the side.  You take a bite of the duck and sip the wine. Works really well.

Poutine á la Belge - overall ok, didn't like the type of cheese they used but it's not bad.

Tajine d’aziz a l’agneau (Braised lamb shank with honey, figs, cinnamon & cilantro, served with cous cous and zalouk)

This is their signature dish and if you like lamb you must try it! The lamb's perfectly done, meat falling off the bone.

overall 4/5 forks, would have been 5/5 if they told me be on time, or else we'll cancel your reservation.

Distinct Spaghetti Joint? Not
(1/3/2007 8:24:31 PM)

This restaurant used to be much better. Went last night, the bread was cold/ hard. Asked the waitress to subsitute spicy tomato sauce with cream sauce with my seafood pasta...they forgot, just made it less spicy instead. Didn't even bother to check up on how our food was, and this was a Tuesday night, when half the restaurant was empty.

Don't bother, try Incindio or Chiati instead.

Modern Club
(12/20/2006 4:23:03 PM)

Any Japanese Food Junkie should give Okonomiyaki a try...it's a "Japanese Pancake" made from cabbage and flour mixture, seafood, etc. You can add teriyaki sauce to the top and mayo as well. For variety add udon or yakisoba to it. Modern club has good prices. They do have a limit sushi menu and a fresh sheet as well. Owner is from Osaka, where Okonomiyaki was invented.

Momo's
(12/20/2006 4:01:50 PM)
Most likely the best sushi place in Gastown. Lunch specials are good too, however I've grown sick of them and just order off the menu now. Reasonably priced for downtown core.
